It’s basically about a group of mercenaries, led by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), taking on job to overthrow a dictator out of conscience. This is an ensemble film featuring all of the veteran action stars minus Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris. It is directed and co-written by Stallone, the main protaganist himself.
Let’s not talk about how common the plot is. It’s an action flick. Nobody should expect much from it. The only thing that’s special about this film is the amount of huge action stars featured. Other than that, it’s really nothing much and not to say it lacks of action. There are enough action scenes just that there aren’t that impressive. The humour actually entertained me more than anything else in the movie. Put it this way, if it wasn’t because of the big names, this would have been quite an unwatchable film. Stallone should never try to write, direct and act for the same movie ever again.
I seriously think they had no idea how to use Jet Li for this movie. Yes I know the Hollywood film makers love to have Asians for comic relief, but come on, Jet Li? (SPOILER BEGINS HERE) He has two fighting scenes against Dolph Lundren, who’s the villain, and had him to lose in both of them. That’s absurb. Not mention how he has to have his ass saved by Stallone thrice in total. Such a skilled martial artist put to waste just for racist humour (SPOILER ENDS HERE).
Verdict: The only thing I was really impressed with this film is how they managed to get so many huge veteran action stars to play such useless small roles. The movie has few hilarious lines and decent action scenes, but that’s it. Even my sister thinks its boring. It’s like watching a pointless Taiwanese idol-drama.
Favourite quote: (SPOILER BEGINS HERE) “What the fuck’s his (Trench’s) problem?” Mr Church asks and Barney Ross replies, “He wants to be president.” (SPOILER ENDS HERE)
Favourite quote 2: (SPOILER BEGINS HERE) “I’m Buddha and he’s Pest”, Lee Christmas replies Sandra (SPOILER END HERE).
Least favourite scene: (SPOILER BEGINS HERE) The final battle at the end. They had Randy Couture kill Stone Cold Steve Austin instead of Sylvestre Stallone, Jet Li or Jason Statham. How many of us actually know who this Couture guy is before Googling him? (SPOILER ENDS HERE)
