Movie Review: Devil (2010)

Rated: PG13
Genre: Supernatural thriller
Running Time: 1 hour 21 minutes
Director: Drew Dowdle, John Erick Dowdle
Cast: Chris Messina, Geoffrey Arend, Jenny O’Hara, Logan Marshall-Green

The story (by M. Night Shyamalan) revolves around five strangers with criminal backgrounds that are trapped in an elevator. They are life-threatened as strange things happen whenever the lights in the elevator are down.

The trailer of ‘Devil’ made it seem like a very interesting one to be seen. It is indeed quite an intriguing movie with a couple of decent scares but the script is very poorly written and the length of the film is short.

Verdict: Yet another good story concept by M. Night Shyamalan that suffers from poor script. It could have been a brilliant Twilight Zone episode.

Question marks/Possible flaws: (SPOILER BEGINS HERE) 1. Who was the guy who committed suicide in the beginning of the film and why did he do it? 2. Why can’t the “devil” just kill them all off at one go (or at least four out of five of them) instead of going through all that hassle, giving everyone of them a chance to redeem themselves and revealing itself to the camera? 3. I don’t think they show Dwight’s walkie talkie falling into the elevator so it did seem to me that it just appeared out of nowhere for Tony to make his confession. (SPOILER ENDS HERE)

Did Shyamalan… get this idea from ‘Saw III’?
