Verdict: A realistically thrilling film about survival. Simple story but it certainly has deeper meanings than just about surviving the assaults of a pack of wolves. Some of the scenes are impressively done, fantastic cinematography throughout too, but the computer-generated wolves are not as convincing. Those who won’t find The Grey entertaining are the ones who are expecting the usual Jaws-type of thriller movie. This is quite a scary film, but just not in the common way. Personally, I see The Grey as the first great movie of 2012.
Post-credit scene: [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] The top of Ottway’s (Liam Neeson) head can be seen laying on the Alpha wolf, both breathing but presumably dying [SPOILER ENDS HERE].
#JustSaying: [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] This could’ve been the prequel of Batman Begins (Ottway becomes Ra’s al Ghul and forms the League of Shadows in the snow) or The Twilight Saga (Ottway fucks the wolves to breed werewolves) [SPOILER ENDS HERE].
The black guy… [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] doesn’t survive for long in this one as well [SPOILER ENDS HERE].
Malaysian censorship: The actual length of the film is 117 minutes but here, it’s only 94 minutes. So that’s 23 minutes cut. Strangely, the F-words aren’t censored at all though. A local told Joe Carnahan about this on Twitter and his response was, “Are you kidding?!? The Malay government can kiss my ass.”
Funny Malay subtitles: Assholes = Penjenayah. Fuck = Jadah.
