Adam Shahir Kayoom is set to become the first ever fighter from Malaysia to contend for an MMA World Championship title
I’m sure many Malaysian MMA fans like myself have been waiting a long time for a local MMA fighter to arise, be recognised and fight for a title… and that wait is finally over. As most MMA fans should now by now, our very own representative Adam “Shogun” Kayoom will be facing KO-artist Nobutatsu Suzuki for the inaugural ONE FC World Championship Welterweight title this coming Friday.
Although Kayoom has competitive experience in multiple disciplines and is well versed in both striking and ground game, Suzuki has a scary 9 KO’s out of his 10 wins so that alone just tells us that it’s definitely going to be very, very tough. I predict our countryman’s gonna want to take him to ground and hope that his BJJ skills superior than Suzuki’s. If Kayoom wins, the sport of MMA will definitely grow faster in Malaysia as the Rakyat will then have an inspirational champion to look up to.
A total of 9 Malaysians on the card of ONE FC 12: Warrior Spirit
Surprisingly Peter “The Pistol” Davis is on the card yet again, third event out of the last four. That’s crazy but it’s probably because neither of his previous two fights lasted through the first round and sustained no serious injury. He and his gym MuayFit have been in a losing streak so it will be absolutely crucial for him win in this coming fight. His opponent from Egypt, Alaa Mazloum, is a Wushu champion with much lesser MMA experience so we should expect Peter to be able to win himself back to the winning bracket.
And as you can on the full fight card on the right, the Malaysian National Featherweight Championship Final is happening but finalist Chee Jian Kai will be replaced by AJ Lias Mansor, whom he had beaten in the semis, due to injury. AJ will be facing the other finalist, Melvin Yeoh Chian Yik, and at the end of it, we shall know who’s the best featherweight fighter in Malaysia.
The co-main event will feature two fighters I’m not really familiar with but one of them is apparently a 5-time BJJ World Champion and that alone sounds pretty interesting. Malaysian prospect Gianni Subba will be facing fellow countryman Chen Yun Ting while Saiful Merican, after his impressive win in the MIMMA Grand Finals, is back and this time facing a Cambodian boxer Tok Sophon.
All these exciting fights will be happening this coming Friday on November 5th 2013 at Stadium Putra in Kuala Lumpur. Tickets are available at AirAsiaRedTix.com. The undercard bouts will be broadcast live on ONE FC’s website and YouTube while the main card will be on Astro ESPN Starsports (for Malaysia).
