TUF 18 Finale: Diaz punches to victory, Pena & Holdsworth winners of the season

Nick Diaz dazes Gray Maynard in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 18 finale UFC

Nate Diaz 2 – 1 Gray Maynard; winners of The Ultimate Fighter season 18 are Julianna Pena and Chris Holdsworth

Just a quick one, I have nothing much to say ’cause I didn’t watch this season of The Ultimate Fighter (18th season). It was the first TUF season ever with female coaches (Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate), and apparently the worst season ever according to some. Also, UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey seemed to have lost plenty of fans due to her apparent bitchy personality in the series. Well, many might be delighted that both female and male winners of the finale, Julianna Pena and Chris Holdsworth (not the Thor actor), were from Team Tate.

Nate Diaz, the bad ass brother of bad ass retired Nathan (Nick) Diaz, is now back to winning bracket after defeating his long-time arch rival Gray Maynard, whom he’s beaten in the semi-finals of TUF season 5 and lost to in UFC Fight Night 20. It was a much needed win as he had lost his previous two fights and the UFC are commonly known to cut fighters who lost 3 in a row. The main event bout kicked off with Maynard taking down Diaz quite easily with a single-leg but when both of them got back on their feet, Diaz schooled his 34-year-old opponent (6 year older) with his impressive boxing skills. After dazing Maynard with a short left jab, Diaz attacked with mad consecutive punch combinations to the face for 30 seconds before the referee decides to stop the fight. I believe it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a UFC main event bout stopped by the referee when both fighters were still on their feet. It was, however, the right decision. Seconds right after the ref pulled Diaz away, Maynard fell to his knees due to the effects of Diaz’s shots.
