UFC on Fox 9: No surprises – Johnson, Faber, Mendes win

UFC on Fox 9 - Demitrious Johnson the Mighty Mouse KO Benavides and ground and pound meme

“Mighty Mouse” is still the UFC Flyweight champ, Urijah and Mendes might now be the no. 1 contenders for the titles of their respective weight divisions

Just a quick one again, since there’s nothing much to talk about this time. It’s one of those nights where most bouts ended with unanimous decisions, only one ended with a submission, the main event ended within the first round, and the main card favourites won.

The former number one UFC Featherweight title contender Chad Mendes was very ill prior to this fight of his against Nik Lentz but he managed to win via decision with boring takedown-scoring strategy. This is his 5th straight win according to Wikipedia and I’ve no doubt that there’ll be a Aldo vs. Mendes 2 for the title soon.

Urijah Faber, too, might be the next one in line to challenge for the title of his own division again after winning his 4th straight. He had a very impressive performance on this night against young Michael McDonald, who was overpowered by the former number one UFC Bantamweight title contender’s pace, movement, accurate counters and ultimately got caught with one of Faber’s deadly specialties – the guillotine choke. It was the only submission of the night but what an aggresive one it was. McDonald tried to hold and wait for an escape opportunity but all that scrambling and rolling probably got the choke tighter, which forced him to tap out.

And then we have the great Flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson successfully defending his title belt for the third time. In this main event, he faced Joseph Benavidez for the second time in his career, the first was inaugural for the title. The champ, whose trainer is ONE FC‘s Vice President of Operations, showed plenty of quick footwork and dodging-and-counter movements as usual, and it worked once again. The challenger was impatient with his attacks and ended up getting caught with a counter right-hook to his chin in just 2 mins into the bout. He was knocked out cold before even before Johnson follow ups with nasty ground and pounds.
