UFC on FOX 10: Thomson goes all 5 rounds with Henderson with broken thumb

Henderson vs. Thomson in UFC on FOX 10

Tough man John Thomson unfortunate to have broken thumb during fight, but manages to finish the bout and losing only by split decision

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson needed the judges’ scorecard to defeat John Thomson despite his opponent was injured practically throughout the entire bout. Thompson got Henderson’s back almost immediately as soon as round one began and stayed there for quite a long time. But Henderson managed to struggle back to his feet and forced Thomson to let go of his body triangle otherwise he’d be carrying his own weight as well. This happened in every round if my memory serves me right. But it’s evident that it became more difficult for Thomson as he’s distracted by his broken thumb, although he did fight on and put on quite a resilient performance through his wrestling and BJJ skills.

It’s a tough call, hard for me to say who actually really won. If I didn’t know that Thomson broken his thumb in that first round, I probably would’ve booed just like the audience there. Although Henderson showed great balance and submission defense, it wasn’t his most impressive performance offensively, scoring points with mostly insignificant shots from the clinch before the final round where he began attacking Thomson’s injured hand with kicks. Thomson on the other hand seemed to have had more takedowns and had the back of Henderson multiple times.

John Thomson, during post-fight press conference, said that he thought he definitely did enough to win the fight, and that he’s beaten the former champ with only one hand. He said he might be retiring regardless of whether or not he won tonight.
