Upfront Arena: Foals & Monster Cat rocked KL Live | Gig Review

Foals at Upfront Arena KL Live Malaysia

Foals & Monster Cat deliver electrifying performance in Malaysia

Foals brought the house down at the first Upfront Arena held at KL Live last night with their euphoric sound of rock, techno and funk. The 5-piece indie band from UK pleased the hundreds to thousands of Malaysian and travelling fans in Kuala Lumpur with their popular hits such as My Number, Inhaler and Spanish Sahara, engaging the awesome crowd to dance, headbang and sing along almost the entire set. Frontman Yannis Philippakis even went crowd surfing and taking a tour around the floor during their numbers. The Englishmen came out for three more songs during encore, the curtain closing with a hop-n’-sing-a-along track – Two Steps, Twice (thanks to @box_to_box on Twitter for correcting me on the title).

Monster Cat from Singapore was the opening act for Foals and they were fucking awesome as well. It was like hearing Billy Corgan’s (Smashing Pumpkins) chesty vocals in rocked up rendition of Fever Ray dark melodic tunes, with a bit of The Mars Volta feel. Very compelling and engaging sound. I can’t understand why the small bunch in front of me in the crowd were so impatient, shouting “we want Foals” repeatedly while such great music was being played. The organisers should’ve mentioned the lineup of the acts on the promotional posters though.

My girlfriend and I attended this gig unfamiliar with both the bands, without expecting to stay until the end, but we did, and I’m now blasting Spotify with their tracks. What a performance by the bands, what a show, what a way to kick off Upfront Arena by The Bee in their renewed partnership with Tiger Beer. Can’t wait for the next instalment!
