UFC Fight Night 40: Brown survives & beats up Silva bad

Erick Silva bloodied TKO by Matt Brown in UFC Fight Night 40

Matt Brown wins 7 straight and might very well be the next contender for the Middleweight title

He wins one, he loses one – Erick Silva’s (16-5) inconsistent streak in the UFC continues after his loss against Matt Brown (19-11) on this night in Cincinnati. “The Fight of the Night” was filled with action from beginning until referee Herb Dean has seen enough. It was even more of a roller coaster ride for me as I was rooting for Silva but unfortunately his conditioning and awareness were just too poor.

We all know how explosive Erick Silva is but it was Matt Brown who closed in with a kick and one-two but went into too close and got taken down. He managed to roll and reserve but both stood back up immediately with Brown throwing a head kick. All that in the first 20 seconds alone and that’s how crazy the pace of the bout was. Silva delivered body kicks which got Brown down and almost out. Silva when right on top of him to ground and pound. Brown was in trouble but as soon as Herb Dean gave the warning, he had to give his back away. Here, Silva spend all of his energy trying to get the rear naked choke but Brown managed to survive around 2 minutes of that horror. Brown was let loose when Silva tried to lock one of Brown’s arm with his legs.

From then and until the third round where the bout ended with Brown getting the TKO, Silva was completely out of gas. He was practically wobbly on his own, can be easily tripped and taken down, and he just kept eating Brown’s strikes, mostly close range elbows and knees. Brown was obviously hurting with the body shots, but for unknown reason, Silva didn’t attack it that much and his corner apparently didn’t even advice him to do so either, which was just frustrating as the fight could’ve turned out very differently if he did that. Brown put his hands onto his stomach whenever he was hit there and yet Brown didn’t seem to be aware. Guess he was so tired that he lost his focus.

In round 3, Brown walked both of them to the ground and ended up in Silva’s guard. He kept delivering early strikes and eventually one elbow finally cut and bloodied Silva up. The Brazilian didn’t even try to get back to his feet and just turned to the side while Brown kept throwing heavy punches down, forcing the ref to stop the contest. Silva was sent to the hospital due to concussion and possible broken jaw. Was it one of the fights of the year? Some were claiming it as so, but how could we call it that when it was pretty much one-sided since the final third of first round? However, it was darn entertaining nonetheless.

In the co-event between two muscular middleweight strikers, Costas Philippou (12-4) comes back to the winner’s bracket with a knockout on Lorenz Larkins (14-3) after some really powerful, firework exchanges. At the beginning, it seemed that Larkins was the more aggressive one but got caught after missing a counter swing while being backed off to the fence by Philipous’s strong low kicks. Philippou delivered a three-two punch combo (left hook, right straight) that put Larkins down and out. Larkins has lost 3 out of his 4 fights in the UFC thus far so if he doesn’t prove himself with results soon, getting cut may be inevitable.
