Movie Review: Contracted (2013)

Contracted movie still

Warning: You might lose your sexual appetite after watching Contracted

The film kicks off like the teen party romance comedy Can’t Hardly Wait (1998) with the focal character, Samantha, who also kind of look like a discount version of Jennifer Lopez, who goes to a party alone (in a sexy outfit) after a breakup and turning guys down around (what a cock teaser). She ends up getting raped by someone who had sex with a corpse while handling a test tube, and contracts a sexually-transmitted disease which sickens her and causes her body condition to worsen. The film depicts the day-to-day progression of the unknown disease.

I absolutely despise body horror flicks but this one, although still very disturbing, it’s mild enough for general audience to enjoy. It’s compelling and scary ’cause this shit could happen to anyone. But director-writer Eric England has resort to a less realistic human behaviour to add up to the thrill. Not only the frustratingly naive lesbian character is reluctant to seek for help immediately, she handles her decaying body parts without totally freaking out, which is painful to watch and might make you scream, “why the fuck did you do that for, idiot?!” to the screen. It’s great performance by unfamiliar actress Najarra Townsend as Samantha, but the scripting for the characters is poor, which makes me wonder if that’s the reason why the acting of the rest of the cast is so unconvincing.

The film does have its moral message (use condoms, seek for help immediately when something is terribly wrong with your body, know that your parent(s) care, etc.) but the ending is the real cherry on top. [SPOILER UNTIL THE END OF PARAGRAPH] It ends with Samantha fully transformed into an undead, and just like in most zombie stories, she wakes up from a car crash, surrounded by the police and dashes to someone for flesh. Contracted can easily be the prequel of most zombie stories that focuses only on how an outbreak could’ve begun, instead of the apocalypse.

Many critics have compared Contracted to Canadian film titled Thanatomorphose (2012) due to its similarities, but I have not seen it so I will not judge its originality. Looking at the stills of that movie, it does look more gory than Contracted, and hence, I shall not watch it. For those who’re interested in such horror flicks, but ones that are not too extreme, Contracted is the one to go for.

What I would’ve named the film: “The Beginnings of the Walking Dead”

Censorship in Malaysia: The F-bombs were uncut but the makeout and sex sequences were.

Second opinion: My girlfriend felt that the movie was like a disturbing version of a sex education film, funny at the same time and at parts, a bit stupid.

Verdict: Unpleasantly entertaining.
