UFC Fight Night 50: Jacare guillotines Mousasi, Overeem loses again

Ronaldo Jacare Souza guillotine choke Gegard Mousasi in UFC Fight Night 50

Mousasi outgrappled by “Jacaré” Souza, Rothwell takes hits from Overeem & counters effectively

There isn’t really much to talk about the main event as Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza (21-3) totally dominated Gegard Mousasi (35-5-2) from the beginning until he tapped out in the third round. In the first two of the scheduled five-round bout, Jacare managed to take Mousasi down almost with ease and just controlled the top until the end of each round. Besides the triangle lock and the up-kicks, Mousasi couldn’t do anything to reverse Jacare’s advantageous positions on top of him, which allowed Jacare to attempt multiple submission moves but Mousasi defended well enough.

At the beginning of the third round, Mousasi showed that he’s more comfortable standing up striking but he wasn’t wining in that department either, but Jacare decided to take him down anyway after a few good heavy-swinging exchanges. They went back on their feet but Mousasi had no answer to Jacare’s takedowns as he got his back to the ground again. When Mousasi tried to sit up leaning onto the fence, Jacare crawled right onto Mousasi’s thigh and went for a deep guillotine choke which forced Mousasi to tap. Jacare got his revenge, and his 7th straight win, this certainly proves that Jacare might be a real deal contender for the Middleweight title.

Overeem TKO vy Rothwell in UFC Fight Night 50

Alistair Overeem (37-14) was back in action featured in the co-main event of this card, a bout between two fighters who failed a drug test within the past 2 years. He seemed to be in great shape presumably without steroids this time and he really started well, landing a lot of stikes but his opponent of the night, Ben Rothwell (34-9) who’ve just returned from suspension due to failing drug test as well, absorbed ’em all like as though there were nothing and countered with two very accurate power punches – the first one was a hook to Overeem’s chin which wobbled him, and the second one caught Overeem right above the ear. That dropped him and Rothwell jumped right onto his back to followup with ground and pound. The referee was forced to stop the fight was Overeem did not respond or defend those strikes.

And then Rothwell got arrogant, dancing right in front of Overeem and talked like as though he’s an inspiring figure. I would love to see him get trashed in the his next fight. As for Overeem, he loses again the next time, he might need to consider going to Bellator or the ONE FC, or somewhere that allows fighters to take steroids.
