UFC on Fox 13: Dos Santos vs. Miocic

Junior dos Santos cardio and boxing abilities triumps over Stipe Miocic

Junior dos Santos (17-3) was dominated by Stipe Miocic (12-2) on the clinch and his face was bloodied but he regained confidence and began throwing more punches after dropping his opponent with a counter left hook in the third round. He also stuffed more than 10 of Miocic’s takedown attempts. Dos Santos’ cardio was good, he paced himself very well through out the 5-round bout and never slowed down in the entire bout. Miocic, on the other hand, it was his first time in a 25 minute fight so he was already gassed out by the 4th round and that’s when his face began to be bloodied as well.

We all know Miocic could kick very well, strange thing was that he didn’t really try to apply much kicks to this fight. He just pushed forward and clinched most of the time, other than that it’s pretty much just a boxing match. Dos Santos was horrible at backing off to the fences without getting tagged and almost did nothing to counter but I think his corner gave him some useful advice which gave him the knock down in the third round and that was a momentum shifting moment. Dos Santos was even winning at the clinch from then on and executed a nice three-punch combo once.

Ultimately, they both have a takedown each, they both had their face screwed (but evidently more so for Dos Santos) but Dos Santos had way more strikes landed and two almost-knockouts if I remember correctly. Well deserved win for Dos Santos, a truly hard-fought win as Joe Rogan said, but if this is how he’s going fight all the time, he’d never get the Heavyweight title back from Cain Velasquez.

Rafael dos Anjos takes out Nate Diaz’s overweight leg and dominates completely, Alistair Overeem knocks out giant Stefan Struve from the top

Dos Anjos leg kick Nate Diaz UFC on Fox 13

Nate Diaz (17-10) got his right thigh badly bruised by the kicks of Rafael dos Anjos (23-7) and was thoroughly dominated from standup to the ground. Diaz didn’t make weight and it didn’t even look like he trained well for this fight. He couldn’t even remain at the orthodox stance to defend his leg-in-pain. Before the first round was even over, he was already limping and from then onwards, he didn’t do jack at all. Dos Anjos just kept chopping his legs mercilessly (and the sound was loud), was good on the ground as well and in the end, won by unanimous decision (2 of the judges actually scored 30-26, that’s how bad Diaz was). Diaz really needs to start improve himself otherwise he might very well get released by the UFC if he fails to make weight and then lose like this again.

Alistair Overeem (38-14) is back to the winning bracket again, for how long, I dunno, but he did well against the 7-footer fellow Dutchman Stefan Struve (25-7) by taking the fight to the ground beautifully and not allowing his tall opponent to cancel off his major reach advantage. Overeem won by TKO in the very first round after one of his down punches hit Struve’s chin which disabled his defense long enough for Overeem to rain more punches to knock him out. I believe Overeem wasn’t on steroids as he didn’t look ripped and he wasn’t as dominant as it sounds (ha-ha).

On the day before, it was The Ultimate Fighter 20 Finale (A Champion Will Be Crowned) where Team Anthony Pettis’ Carla Esparza became the inaugural UFC Women’s Strawweight champ after defeating fellow finalist Rose Namajunas via rear naked choke in the third round. This season was the first time ever to feature only women. Pettis and Gilbert Melendez were the coaches. Poor Melendez, he lost both this and last week’s title fight.
