UFC 190: Rousey KO’s Correia in 34 seconds, Shogun wins Nogueira again

UFC 190 Ronda Rousey KO Correia meme

Was there any doubt that Ronda Rousey would easily trash Bethe Correia, or any female opponent for that matter?

Women’s Bantamweight undefeated champion Ronda Rousey (12-0) has once again easily and quickly finished her fight, this time against Brazilian fighter Bethe Correia (9-1), handing her the first loss of her career in her own country. Rousey said that she’s not going finish the fight fast as she has no mercy against her disrespectful trash-talking opponent but in the end, she had to as Correia started brawling as soon as the opening bell rang.

Although Correia did land a few punches but she pulled a clinch and as soon as they broke off, Rousey showed why she’s a freak of nature, connecting with very quick combos. Correia got backed to the fences and could not escape the onslaught. Rousey knocked her out with a right punch to the side of Correia’s face. Well at least Correia lasted 20 seconds more than Rousey’s previous fight against Cat Zingano who was submitted in just 14 seconds. Was there any doubt in the first place that Rousey would win? I don’t think UFC would be able to find or develop another female fighter in this division that’s going to be as talented as Rousey in a short period of time.

In the co-main event, it was an overdue rematch between two Pride FC legends, both Brazilians, Antônio Rogério “Minotouro” Nogueira (21-7) and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (23-10). Nogueira tagged Rua in the first round by his glancing the top of Rua’s head with his punch, Rua was in all sorts of trouble but did well to defend his chin and weather the storm. He took Nogueira down in the second round and controlled the fight but the bout became boring. He kept throwing body kicks which landed occasionally. Nogueira’s boxing seemed to be better throughout the fight and he had an almost-submission with the guillotine choke but Rua managed to escape. The judges awarded Rua with the unanimous decision victory, which I find quite questionable. Even the audience were booing.

Rogerio’s older twin brother Antônio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (34-10-1), a former heavyweight champion in both UFC and Pride, also lost via unanimous decision against young Dutchman Stefan Struve (26-7). Antonio “Big Foot” Silva on the other hand silenced critics like myself by putting himself back onto the winners bracket after defeating Australian fighter Soa Palelei (22-5) by technical knockout with his strikes. Big Foot may not have the speed or the agility, but he has the experience, will and knockout power. Two Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 4 finals were on the card as well with Glaico França and Reginaldo Vieira winning the Lightweight and Bantamweight bouts respectively. Cláudia Gadelha defeated Jessica Aguilar in the Women’s Strawweight title eliminator fight via unanimous decision.

Last week at UFC on Fox 16, Bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw (12-2) dominated against former champ Renan Barao (33-3) and won by technical knockout to seal his second successful title defence, and second win against Barao.
