ONE: Pride of Lions – Askren-Santos 2 cancellation, Dejdamrong retains title

“Funky” Ben shares funny story on how his rematch with Luis “Sapo” got cancelled, Victor Cui disgusted

It is hard not to feel bad for ONE Championship. They’ve had a fair share of bout cancellations in the past, but never for one as huge as this one. Welterweight champ Ben Askren (14-0) was supposed to face Luis “Sapo” Santos (61-9) in their highly anticipated rematch in Singapore last night but the latter failed to make weight. When Santos was offered by Askren to fight 190 lbs, he stuffed himself with food to ensure that he’d fail that one as well. Hear the whole story from Askren himself;

So unbelievable you have to hear it for yourself!

CEO of ONE, Victor Cui, was very pissed off as well;

First of all, to be fair to Santos, it did look like Askren poked his eye in the first fight. But now after hearing this hilarious story, it does start to feel that Santos could’ve continued to fight in spite of that eye-poke but pretended that he couldn’t. I really don’t understand (probably because I’m not a fighter) how Santos could be 2.2 lbs over the 170 lbs welterweight limit, and then can’t even make 190 lbs on the next day? And why didn’t ONE make it a catchweight bout at 172.2 lbs? This whole thing makes little sense to me. I guess we will have to wait and see how Santos would respond to this.

UPDATE: The other side of the story has surfaced and this one is much more believable. Read this report.

Despite the disappointment, ONE: Pride of Lions went on without the actual main event. I didn’t get to catch any of the fights but the highlights of the strawweight title bout posted on Facebook by ONE Championship themselves (now removed) sort of indicates that the champ Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke (6-0) shouldn’t have won by decision over Brazilian challenger Yago Bryan Farias De Morais (3-1). In the short clip, we can see Dejdamrong bloodied with a cut above his eye, got knocked down, slipped when launching a headkick, and had some of his knees nicely blocked by Morais. But then again, it’s ONE’s overall scoring system so it still bound to have controversies from time to time. Will update here again if I get to watch the full fight.

Next up, it’s ONE: Dynasty of Champions happening in Beijing on next Saturday the 21st featuring the featherweight title unification bout between Narantungalag Jadambaa and Marat Gafurov, and the flyweight title bout between Adriano Moraes and Kairat Akhmetov. Let’s just hope it won’t get cancelled again and that I could watch it live.
