Trailer Review: Warcraft (2016)

Orcs, Humans, video game-standard CGI, no Undead or Night Elves — BORING

I used to play Warcraft a bit before DotA came along. I am a fan of this film adaptation’s director, Duncan Jones, who did Source Code (2011) and Moon (2009) which were each one of my favourite films of its respective year. I did not read anything about this movie as I was hoping for the trailer to fully blow my mind. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

I thought it was going to be a fully 3-D animated movie like the Final Fantasy films but it turned out to be more like Avatar (2009) where you have live action actors and great fantasy settings but visually unconvincing non-human characters. If I didn’t know that this is a movie trailer, I would’ve thought it’s a remake of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (1994), the first instalment of the game franchise. Seriously, the CGI is such a let down that some would even think that the story is set in the video game. Not just the imagery, simple movements are unrealistic enough. Lazy buggers should’ve used more practical effects. 100 million dollars of production budget well spent on production studios Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment? Stick to making games, Blizzard! But I’m gonna give it the benefit of the doubt. Maybe, just maybe, the effects weren’t complete and they are still early in post-production.

That’s not even the worst thing. From what I can see in the trailer, there will be no Undead or the Night Elves. Basically, it’s sort of based on the first game only, the war between only two races, Humans and Orcs. Let’s be honest, that sounds fucking boring. Jones, who’s also the co-screenwriter, has a tall order to achieve a flying-colour start for this film franchise. The other co-screenwriter is Charles Leavitt, whose best work was the multiple Oscar-nominated Blood Diamond (2006) but both of them were only able to come up with a storyline involving some Orcs joining forces with Humans to fight against extremist Orcs and there’s a mixed breed caught in the middle that’s obviously going to be the key to unite these two boring races (guess we’re going to see another human and alien porking). It’s an unoriginal plot. They’d better make sure everything else is fantastic.

Most known actors? Toby Kebbell (Fantastic Four, RocknRolla), Daniel Wu (That Demon Within, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart) and Dominic Cooper (Dracula Untold, Marvel Cinematic Universe). I’ve no idea the heck Travis Fimmel is. I don’t know when exactly it’s releasing in Malaysia. Quite frankly, I don’t really care. I hope the next trailer would change my mind.
