BPL Season 2015/2016: Arsenal 2 – 1 Leicester City

Match review & rant by a Malaysian Gooner

If we didn’t win today, I would’ve been writing about why le boss Arsene Wenger needs to fuck off. We were playing well for the first 10 – 20 minutes and then we did what we always do when we ran out of ideas — crossing the ball in as though Olivier Giroud is fucking Vince Carter. We weren’t even holding or attempted to control possession in search of a play, and both our superstars Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez were very off today. Ozil was lacking of pace while Sanchez was just miss-kicking the ball whenever he had a chance to score. We did not have a shot on target until our equalising goal.

Leicester City is on top of the league for a reason. They are genuinely good in almost every department. In fact, they outplayed us and the Gunners’ display was crap until Simpson got himself a second yellow card. We weren’t great defensively as well. Petr Cech had to make some amazing world class saves, as usual like every game, and this epic moment where he bravely did a fake clearance. For those Gooners who say that Vardy dived to get the penalty, get real. Nacho Monreal was stupid enough to stuck his foot out for the taking. But I would agree that the referee was one-sided in the first half until probably he got complained by Wenger to death and decided to be fair in the second. There was another penalty claim in the second half but the ref didn’t do shit. And if that wasn’t a penalty, it’s a yellow card for diving. There should’ve been a whistle.

Wenger made some brilliant substitution decisions. Calum Chambers came in immediately after the half-time for Laurent Koscielny for better mobility, and because Koscielny would’ve had difficulty marking Leicester City’s speedsters Vardy and Mahrez with the yellow card in mind. Theo Walcott came in and scored the great headed pass by Giroud in the box off the edge-of-the-box cross by Hector Bellerin. And then we kept wasting chances (but at least the players showed hunger) until Wenger decided to go all out for the win, which is rare, and subbed in Danny Welbeck, who hadn’t played for months due to injury, and he scored in a header at the very last injury-time minute from Ozil’s free kick.

What a dramatic win to complete the double on the current league leaders, and we’re the only club this season to have done that (we beat at their turf 2 – 5 in September). We have to give some credit to Simpson for being dumb enough to pull Giroud’s shirt when he’s already on a yellow card, and the Baptista-looking player we conceded the free kick for us to score the winning goal. Only two points behind Leicester now. Title hopes revived. If we do go on and win the title this season, I believe most wouldn’t disagree that this win was the pivotal moment indeed.
