TGV surprise patrons by upgrading tickets to IMAX

Almost 1,000 standard hall audiences were moved to IMAX hall

What an awesome post-April’s Fool Day surprise for some of those who were catching Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice last weekend with standard hall tickets at TGV Cinemas 1 Utama or Sunway Pyramid. A thousand of these lucky fellows were deliberately upgraded to watch the blockbuster in IMAX 3D… no extra charge.

Besides the complimentary IMAX upgrades, these fellas also received a pair of IMAX passes, Batman v Superman t-shirt and car sticker. Pretty sweet reward for these TGV patrons who were catching the movie this late (after all the spoilers and memes on social media). I’m sure a lot of them were thinking that there was a technical glitch, ’cause it happens from time to time. I would’ve been genuinely surprised if I was there.

TGV Cinemas’ Senior Marketing Manager, Celeste Koay, said, “This ‘surprise’ exercise was a way of showing appreciation to customers for their support and to introduce the cinemas’ one of the unique concept hall -IMAX to those who have not had the chance to experience it yet.”

Koay explained, “Some movies are best enjoyed in an IMAX hall because the digitally remastered blockbuster turns an already powerful movie into a breathtaking IMAX blockbuster with unparalleled image and sound quality. This IMAX proprietary technology provides crystal clear and sharp visuals which delivers the world’s most immersive movie experience. IMAX is actually the acronym for Image MAXimum. It is a motion picture film format set by the Canadian Company, IMAX Corporation, a theatre company founded in 1967.”

“A large part of the IMAX experience is the sound. That’s what makes an IMAX movie different. You don’t just see an IMAX film, you feel it. One reason is the sheer power of the custom, patented speaker system in an IMAX theatre. The sound is altered by the listening environment and delivers a result so precise that you can hear a pin drop from across the room – and know exactly where it fell,” added Koay.

[UPDATED] The statements above were amended based on TGV Cinemas’ revised press release. TGV Cinemas realised that there were factual errors on their previous statement about their IMAX halls (the 70mm part).
