Japanese Film Festival 2016 Malaysia to screen 13 titles including After the Storm and An which feature multiple award-winning actress Kiki Kirin

“… I don’t have a manager so all the money goes to me,” said Kiki Kilin-san through her translator and everyone at the press conference burst out laughing. “I wasn’t born pretty. Not many people like to play the grandma roles so it’s been easy for me to get roles to play.” The charm, sense of humour and modesty of this 73-year-old legendary movie star have certainly caught everyone by surprise.

Kiki Kilin (or ‘Kirin’), a numerous award-winning actress including the recent Lifetime Achievement Award at the 10th Asian Film Awards earlier this year, came to Kuala Lumpur all the way from Japan to celebrate the launch of this year’s Japanese Film Festival (JFF) and the Malaysian premiere of her latest film After the Storm. As though her warm personality and amazing life story hadn’t already earned respect from everyone at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) in Pavilion that evening, catching her performance in the heartfelt comedy drama impressed us even further.

Besides After the Storm, 2015 critically acclaimed film An (also known as Sweet Bean) which stars her in a leading role is also one of the 13 very interesting featured titles for this 13th annual Festival. There are dramas, comedies, romance, thriller, an anime, live action adaptations of mangas, arthouse gems and award-winners. All films are with English subtitles. Let’s not kid ourselves — we play their video and mobile games, we watch their animes and read their mangas since young, we love their culture — there’s no way we’re gonna miss out on any JFF in Malaysia!

JFF 2016 Malaysia kicks off in Klang Valley today until the 14th at GSC Mid Valley, Pavilion KL, 1 Utama and Nu Sentral. Penang will be from September 15th until 18th at GSC Gurney Plaza followed by Kuching at GSC CityOne Megamall from 22nd till 25th and Kota Kinabalu at GSC Suria Sabah from September 29th until October 2nd.
