Death Note: Light Up the New World

Genre: Suspense, psychological thriller
Malaysia Release Date: 8 December 2016
Local Distributor: TGV Pictures

While Hollywood is producing their film adaptation of this brilliant manga title, Japan has released an original sequel to their own live action adaptation, making it the 4th instalment in the franchise after the 2008 spinoff L: Change the World. Directed by Shinsuke Sato (Gantz), the story takes place 10 years after the events in Death Note 2: The Last Name (2006) where 6 Death Notes have been brought into the world and the successor of L must play the cat-and-mouse game to prevent them from failing into the hands of a Kira worshiper and a special task force. Tatsuya Fujiwara reprises his role as Light Yagami (Kira) presumably only for a cameo appearance in the prison. It feels that this sequel is a final cash-grab before Hollywood releases their version. Can’t wait to see if it’s at least entertaining though.

Hell or High Water

Genre: Neo-western heist-crime drama
Malaysia Release Date: 17 November 2016
Local Distributor: TGV Pictures

This film currently holds a 98% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 183 reviews and might just be a contender for the upcoming award season nominations. Directed by David MacKenzie (Starred Up) and written by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario), Hell or High Water stars Chris Pine (Star Trek films, The Finest Hours) and Ben Foster (The Finest Hours, The Program) as a pair of brothers who try to rob a number of banks to save their farm but they are pursued by an experienced, aging sheriff played by Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart, Tron).
