Top Movie Picks — February 2017

John Wick 2

Director: Chad Stahelski (co-directed the predecessor)
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Ruby Rose, Ian McShane
Malaysia Release Date: 9 Feburary 2017

Did you know the director was the late Brandon Lee’s stunt double for The Crow (1994)? No wonder why the action sequences in the first film was top notch. And he’s back as the sole director for this sequel with “The One” Keanu Reeves back to reprise his role. Though a dog may not be the plot device this time, John Wick 2 seems to have a bigger plot that may dig deeper into the assassin’s world that I find very interesting in the first film. Can’t wait to catch this!

The LEGO Batman Movie

Director: Chris McKay (Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III)
Voice Cast: Will Arnett, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Zach Galifianakis, and Mariah Carey
Malaysia Release Date: 9 February 2017

The LEGO Movie was my favourite animation of 2014 and when I heard that the Batman from there (voiced by Arrested Development‘s Will Arnett) was going to have its own film featuring other LEGO-DC superheroes, I was like, HELL YEAH! But when the trailers came out, I wasn’t really impressed. Well let’s hope and see. Not one that we would miss out on even if the trailers sucked.

Hidden Figures

Director: Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent)
Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons
Malaysia Release Date: 23 February 2017

DON’T WATCH THE TRAILER ‘ cause as usual, it spoils too much. Officially a 2016 film in the U.S. and nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Suppporting Actress in the upcoming 89th Academy Awards (#OscarMoreBlackThisTime), Hidden Figures is based on a non-fiction book about female African American mathematicians who worked at the NASA when there was still racial segregation in the 1960s. What most of us didn’t know was that the roles of these ladies were pivotal in the world’s first ever human spaceflight project. The film currently holds an aggregated score of 93%. I’m definitely watching this one before the Oscars!
