Top Movie Picks for March 2017 Releases in Malaysia

Director: James Mangold (The Wolverine, 3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line)
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen
Malaysia Release Date: 2 March 2017

It ain’t no longan fruit business here. 20th Century Fox seems to have seen the light of doing mature, not-for-children Marvel films after their box office success with Deadpool last year. Although Fox cannot feature all the Marvel characters from the Old Man Logan comic book that it’s based on, it’s going to be dark and graphically violent, just the way it should be. We even get to see Professor Charles Xavier say the F-word, as seen in the trailers. Maybe we’ll finally see the real wild Wolverine that we know from the X-Men comics and cartoon series, that has never been portrayed on big screen in any X-Men film adaptations. To date, it holds a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. I just can’t wait to catch this.

Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Nick Offerman: American Ham, The Kings of Summer)
Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Jing Tian, Toby Kebbell, John Ortiz
Malaysia Release Date: 9 March 2017

Not only this is a King Kong reboot, but also a prequel to the 2014 Godzilla film which will eventually lead to a Godzilla vs. King Kong film in the future to complete the trilogy. I’ve no idea who the director is but it’s a strong cast and I’m intrigued by the idea of seeing the two kings of monsters clash in a Hollywood big-budget adaptation. Kong: Skull Island seems like it’s going to be like 2005 King Kong film which stars Jack Black, immersing the audience into the scary island filled with deadly, giant monsters, but in a more different, intense tone. Kind of like Jurassic Park, if you asked me. So if you loved J-Park and enjoyed the 2005 Kong, I think you’d most likely be entertained by this one too.

Director: Dean Israelite (Project Almanac)
Cast: Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks
Malaysia Release Date: 23 March 2017

There are a couple more big titles coming in March but I decided to give a “top pick” spot for this one because, let’s face it, if you grew up in the 90s like I did, you’d definitely go and watch this even though it doesn’t look promising at all. Hopefully, it’ll be a surprisingly entertaining ride like Pacific Rim. Can’t wait to see some cheesy-ass dialogues and acting with lots of monster ass-kicking. It’s morphin’ time!
