Top movie picks for May 2017 releases in Malaysia

Malaysia Release Date: 10 May 2017
Genre: Sci-fi horror
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir

The Alien franchise’s prequel saga continues following the not-so-great Prometheus (2012) with the creator and director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Prometheus) returning along actor Michael Fassbender (Assassin’s Creed, Steve Jobs, X-Men films) who will reprise his role as the surviving android David and also a new android named Walter. The android(s) assists a group of people in their mission to explore an uncharted planet but of course, it is filled with the hostile creatures that’ll kick all their asses, breed using their bodies and in the end, probably just be left with one female survivor and an android perhaps. They just never learn don’t they?

Malaysia Release Date: 18 May 2017
Genre: Sci-fi comedy
Director: Nacho Vigalondo
Cast: Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens

Now this one looks genuinely interesting and could well be “genre-defying”. Directed by a Spanish fella who specialises in horror and thriller, Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables, Interstellar, The Intern) plays an ordinary woman who’s somehow in sync with the actions of a gigantic monster terrorising the city of Seoul. It currently holds a score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 65 reviews. Can’t wait to catch this one.

Malaysia Release Date: 18 May 2017
Genre: Sci-fi tech thriller drama
Director: James Ponsoldt
Cast: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega

Directed by James Ponsoldt (The End of the Tour, The Spectacular Now) who has a great track record so far, The Circle is a tech thriller drama based on a novel about a young woman (Emma Watson) who joins a huge internet company that will be rolling out a technology that will see everything that’s going on in everyone’s life in hopes to save lives and stop crimes before they happen. Sounds like a spiritual prequel of Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report (2002), won’t you say? Oh yeah, and Tom Hanks’ in it as well.
