Top movie picks for August 2017 releases in Malaysia

Napping Princess: The Story of the Unknown Me

Malaysia Release Date: 3 August 2017 (TGV cinemas only)
Genre: Anime, sci-fi drama
Director: Kenji Kamiyama (009 Re:Cyborg, Ghost in the Shell series)
Voice Cast: Mitsuki Takahata, Shinnosuke Mitsushima, Tomoya Maeno, Rie Kugimiya

Also known as Ancien and the Magic Tablet elsewhere, the Japanese animated film is about a high school girl named Kokone who constantly falls asleep and suddenly starts having the same dream over and over again. Just days before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, her father abruptly gets arrested and is taken to Tokyo for unknown reasons. To unravel find out why, she travels to Tokyo with her friend Morio and discovers that her dreams may be the key to the mystery. A very intriguing plot with impressive hand-drawn, sci-fi dream visuals. The trailer alone makes me feel like it’s going to be a tear-jerker. I’m hoping it’ll be as surprisingly great as In This Corner of the World that was recently released and which I gave a perfect 5/5 rating.

Annabelle: Creation

Malaysia Release Date: 10 August 2017
Genre: Supernatural horror
Director: David F. Sandberg (Lights Out)
Cast: Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson, Philippa Coulthard

I was initially skeptical about this ’cause the trailer was so typically filled with predictable jumpscares and the first Annabelle film (2014) was so crappy. But I’ve decided to give it the benefit of the doubt ’cause it’s directed by the same guy who did Lights Out (2016), which I thought was really great for its genre. And on top of that, Annabelle: Creation had very good early reviews, currently holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 13 reviews, which is quite shocking to me. The first film is a spinoff of The Conjuring (2013) that tells a story about the titular possessed doll’s “adventure” before it got to the two girls from the opening scene of The Conjuring. And Annabelle: Creation is the prequel of the previous film that focuses on the origin of the doll.

Malaysia Release Date: 24 August 2017
Genre: Jidaigeki action comedy
Director-writer: Yuichi Fukuda
Cast: Shun Oguri, Masaki Suda, Kanna Hashimoto, Yūya Yagira

This is the live action adaptation of the popular manga series Gin Tama that’s a period action comedy about a samurai-cum-freelancer and his friends who stand against aliens who’ve already invaded and are currently ruling Edo, Japan. I honestly don’t know much about the manga but my girlfriend is a huge fan of it When we were in Tokyo, she bought loads of its merchandises and told me enough about it that made me interested in watching it (instead of reading it). It sounds nonsensically fun, mashing Edo period with today’s modern technology and culture. I hope it stays true to its original source by being more humourous than action-oriented.

Marvel’s Inhumans

Malaysia Release Date: 31 August 2017
Genre: Sci-fi action adventure drama, superhero
Director: Roel Reine (Hard Target 2, The Man with the Iron Fists 2)
Cast: Anson Mount, Iwan Rheon, Serinda Swan

This is basically the first two episodes of the series on big screen. If you’re a gigantic fan of the MCU’s (Marvel Cinematic Universe) mythology and expansions, Inhumans is going to be one of those series that you’d start watching when the first season kicks off and what better way than to catch the pilot episodes in IMAX 2D? However, it might only show at TGV Cinemas. Anyway — starring the guy played the sick villain Ramsey Bolton in Game of Thrones, the series focuses on the Inhumans Royal Family who escapes to Hawaii after a military coup. If you’ve been following Agents of SHIELD, you might find the name Inhumans familiar. Yes, they’re people with superpowers basically.
