Here Comes The Boom 2012 film movie poster large key art malaysia

Rated: P13
Genre: Comedy, martial arts, combat sports, action
Running Time: 105 mins
Director: Frank Coraci
Cast: Kevin James, Salma Hayek, Charice, Henry Winkler

Synopsis: “A physics teacher moonlights as a mixed martial arts fighter in order to save his school’s music program” (Sony Pictures).

Verdict: Want to learn a thing or two about MMA (mixed martial arts) or the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) in a comedic way? Well, Here Comes The Boom isn’t it. The film completely neglects the basics, realism, hard training, technical skills, rules and brutality of actual MMA. Not only that, the plot is so typical and overused that it would feel like you’ve seen the movie a dozen of times before. It also doesn’t live up to the title at all, just like how the weak opening scene doesn’t sync with the powerful tune of Wolfmother’s Joker and the Thief song. However, thanks to its decent jokes, it’s not unwatchable, even for a hardcore MMA fan.

Second opinion: “Very funny… ermmm… very funny lor” (Iris Loong).

Priceless cameo appearances: UFC legendary cutman, Stitch, and Chael Sonnen, tapping out to Kevin James’ lousy kimora. The other notable UFC star that appears in the movie is Wanderlei Silva. Joe Rogan appears in a few scenes as well, being a part of the plot.

Least favourite scene: [SPOILER] The climax last fight at the end between Scott Voss (James) and Ken Dietrich (Krzysztof Soszynski) is so unrealistic, it made me sick. First of all, it’s not that easy to get into the UFC. There are many talented fighters in the world who trained and fought their whole life and were recognised as one of the world’s best and yet they didn’t get the chance to so. Secondly, the few most essential and common martial art disciplines like Muay Thai and BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) aren’t even mentioned in the movie at all. And then you have Scott who should’ve lost in the fight a couple of times to TKO (technical knock out) but instead, he gets to go through to the final round where he knocks out his opponent by slamming him to the ground. That is just stupid. Fighters slamming another fighter in guard position to the cage floor is not really harmful and quite common in MMA fights. This scene is an utter disgrace to the UFC and MMA! This movie is purely about the jokes. LOL there are quite a few "missing" scenes which I think the director cut it off to prevent it to be too draggy but yeah, it never really got me into a mood of enjoying the fight scenes
