ONE FC 24: Dynasty of Champions – Ji Xian hands young Song Ya Dong his first career loss

It was the ONE Fighting Championship’s debut in China after a short postponement but despite the Chinese market-targeted fight card, it turned out an entertaining night with the Chinese fighters putting quite a cracking show for the rather quiet crowd at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Beijing.

In the main event, it was an all Chinese bout between one of the nation’s top fighters, Ji Xian (12-2), against the nation’s greatest young prospect, 20-year-old Song Ya Dong (4-1). Ji Xian “the Handsome Executioner” tried to execute Song through his viciously aggressive striking throughout the 3 rounds but Song proved to have the tough young chin which lasted until the end despite Ji’s highly accurate and powerful-looking combos. Song received his first career loss via unanimous decision.

Song was indeed impressive for being able to stay in the fight until the final bell rang as all of Ji’s 13 fights in his career finished with a submission, win or loss. The brave young lad was dodging and backing off to the fences for most parts of the fight while swinging hard blindly on the counter. Although he caught Ji with some pretty good punches, I thought his lack of experience and composure was obvious. He also had a full mount position during the fight but allowed Ji to stand up way too easily. Whereas for Ji, it would be interesting if we’d get to see his firepower and ground game to go up and challenge the Bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes in the future.

In the co-main event, it was Australian Adrian Pang‘s (21-8) debut in the ONE FC and his strong flat-footed forward-pushing approach had Vincent Latoel (15-16) pressured from the very beginning of the bout. While Latoel did well to stay in the fight, he was mostly out-struck and to attempt to minimise Pang’s seemingly heavy hands, he made a crucial mistake by going for a takedown in the third round with his neck left wide open for an effective guillotine choke by Pang that forced him to tap out to. Also in the lightweight division, it was Ariel Sexton‘s (9-3) return to the cage and he won with a rare reverse triangle armlock submission on Anvar Alizhanov (3-1).

In this Beijing and China debut, there was the ONE FC Beijing Featherweight/Flyweight Tournament just like the National Featherweight Tournament in Malaysia last year but it was all done on one night, straight to the semi-finals and then finals. These Chinese amateur fighters sure show a lot of potential, determination and aggression, seemingly way more than our local Malaysian fighters, I have to admit. Li Kai Wen and Li Wei Bin were winners in the featherweight and flyweight tournament respectively via decision and they have shown great striking abilities. It would be interesting to see if these winners, including Ji Xian, would have the same level of confidence and dominance against non-Chinese fighters in future events.

Han Ji Eun was the only ring girl for the night (all the others went on year-end holidays, I suppose?) but it’s okay ’cause that fine sexy plastic babe knows how to carry the show all by herself. I noticed that the camera is now showing the ring girls more than ever before since they got the Korean models back for the job. Thumbs up from me, guys.

In October, ONE FC CEO Victor Cui had announced on Facebook that his MMA promotion will be having two events in China this year but with the lack of news about the second event, I doubt it’ll be happening by the end of December. ONE FC: Dynasty of Champions was likely the final event of 2014.
