Coming soon Malaysia: Rogue One, Assassin’s Creed, Kimi no Na wa

coming soon malaysia december 2016 rogue one assassin's creed your name

Movie picks for December 2016

Apart from Death Note: Light Up the New World, these highly anticipated titles will also be hitting Malaysian big screens in the year’s final month. Great way to end 2016 for movie-goers, especially fans of Star Wars, video games and anime/manga.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Genre: Epic space opera, sci-fi fantasy
Malaysia Release Date: 15 December 2016
Local Distributor: Walt Disney Studios Malaysia

Should I even bother saying anything here? It’s Star Wars, man. You’d watch it regardless of what others may say. Set in between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV – A New Hope, Rogue One offers the story of the group of rebellions who stole the plans of the Death Star. It’s directed by Gareth Edwards who did Godzilla (2014) and Monsters (2010), and features Donnie Yen (Ip Man films, SPL: Killzone, Flash Point). Need I say more? Spoiler alert though — it may not end without tears.

Assassin’s Creed

Genre: Action adventure
Malaysia Release Date: 22 December 2016
Local Distributor: 20th Century Fox Malaysia

Fox doing another adaptation of a video game? It was worrying indeed after the likes of both Hitman films. But after reading more about it and watching the trailer plus it’s Michael Fassbender (Macbeth, Steve Jobs, X-Men films) and award-winning director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Snowtown), I think there’s a huge potential that this wouldn’t suck. Instead of making an adaptation of the game, the film will be part of the game’s universe with a brand new story. So even if it sucked, it’s only gonna suck as an instalment of the franchise as opposed to a typical “video game movie”. And apparently, the “Leap of Faith” is done without visual effects. Serious?! I can’t wait to see it.

Kimi no Na wa (Your Name)

Genre: Anime, fantasy
Malaysia Release Date: 8 December 2016
Local Distributor: AtriNaga

Looking at the poster, I thought it’s just another anime feature film of an anime series I never heard of. But it’s actually a standalone anime based on a fantasy novel about a pair of high school boy and girl who one day got their bodies switched with each other’s. The plot is not new but it does sound interesting in the form of an anime. Currently holding over 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, I guess we just can’t ignore this one coming out next week itself.
